A World of Discovery
Welcome to AISY Preschool
Beginning of Lifelong learning
At AISY Preschool, we see young children as capable, curious, and full of potential. We believe that learning is most powerful when it grows out of play, exploration, and joyful discovery. In our safe, engaging environment, children develop socially, emotionally, and academically as they build the foundations for lifelong learning.
Our program is Reggio Emilia–inspired, play-based, and inquiry-driven, reflecting AISY’s approach to early learning. We view children as active participants in their education and encourage them to explore big ideas through meaningful projects, collaborative play, and authentic experiences. Teachers serve as guides and co-learners, carefully listening to children’s questions and interests and using them to shape the curriculum. To support this, we draw on the DC Early Learning Standards and the Teaching Strategies Creative Curriculum framework, both of which emphasize developmentally appropriate practice and whole-child learning. This combination ensures that our program is both child-centered and aligned with international best practice.
Core Learning Domains
Our daily experiences are designed to support every dimension of the DC standards:
Social & Emotional Development: Building independence, empathy, and cooperation through shared play, routines, and classroom community.
Language & Literacy: Strengthening vocabulary, comprehension, early writing, and a love of stories through interactive reading and storytelling.
Mathematics: Developing number sense, measurement, geometry, and pattern recognition through engaging games and manipulatives.
Scientific Thinking & Inquiry: Encouraging observation, experimentation, and problem-solving through STEAM projects and discovery centers.
Approaches to Learning: Cultivating curiosity, persistence, and creativity as children engage with open-ended materials and collaborative investigations.
Physical Development & Health: Enhancing fine and gross motor skills through outdoor play, movement activities, and daily practice of healthy habits.
Specialist Enrichment
To broaden their experiences, preschoolers also participate in specialist classes each week. Physical Education promotes coordination, movement, and teamwork. Music builds rhythm, listening, and expression through song and instruments. Art encourages creativity and exploration of materials. Together, these subjects enrich children’s learning journey and expand their sense of discovery.
Daily Rhythm
Inspired by AISJ’s early childhood routines, our schedule balances structure and choice. Children begin their mornings with welcoming activities and circle time before moving into core learning experiences, small group projects, and specialist subjects. Outdoor play and gross-motor activities provide balance and energy release, while quiet time after lunch supports rest and reflection. The day concludes with group sharing and a gentle transition to home.
Assessment & Documentation
Assessment at AISY Preschool is ongoing and authentic. Teachers observe children in action, document their growth through notes, photos, and portfolios, and use this evidence to guide instruction. Rather than relying on tests, progress is seen in how children engage with materials, interact with peers, and express their thinking. Families receive regular updates and reflections, keeping them connected to their child’s learning journey.
Transitions & Readiness
We take great care in supporting children as they transition into and beyond preschool. Orientation visits, gradual entry options, and consistent routines help children feel comfortable as they begin school. When preparing for Kindergarten, we emphasize independence, self-regulation, and collaboration, ensuring each child is confident and ready for the next stage of learning.
